2016 Chinese GP F1: Nico Rosberg takes pole, Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso 12th 8th
Nico Rosberg continues to accumulate good results since their five consecutive victories has scored the pole position in the GP of China. Mercedes driver exceeded by half a second to Daniel Ricciardo and will have a good choice of distance in the championship that Lewis Hamilton will start from last place due to mechanical problems with his car.
The Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel will start from the second row. The fourth will be Carlos Sainz who was 8 behind Sergio Perez who ruined his career in Bahrain by a touch in the early stages of the race. Fernando Alonso finished 12th and try to find the points in Sunday’s race.
The qualifying session was played on asphalt almost dry but the rain fall during the day had left a puddle on track as he did lose control of his car to Pascal Wehrlein in the first minutes of the session. That incident caused the first red flag of the session that left behind the qualifying format for deletion and returned to the Q1, Q2 and Q3 traditional made us to see more movement on track in the final minutes of the session.
The star of Q1 was Lewis Hamilton undesirably since the English had problems in the power unit of the Mercedes which forced him to leave. Hamilton also has to fulfill a penalty of 5 grid positions to change the gearbox so will start from the last position. If Mercedes solves the mechanical problems and we add the character of Hamilton have assured a comeback as an inducement for Sunday’s race.
In Q1 also they fell Magnussen, Palmer, Gutierrez and Haryanto . Meanwhile Rosberg, Ricciardo, Vettel and Raikkonen had no problems to advance to Q2 in which there was another red flag in this case because a wheel of Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg shot out of the car .
Hence the Q2 ended up hurting drivers like Felipe Massa who had not had trouble being in Q3 or Fernando Alonso who had options to advance but had to settle for 12th position which is not bad because you can choose the compound with the to go out and mounting the soft could scale positions as the top 10 except Rosberg will be a supersoft that force them to go through the box pretty soon.
In Q3 most drivers returned to the tactic of making two attempts. Raikkonen topped by a tenth to Rosberg in the first. The German had made a small mistake but it was not in his second attempt in which he beat Ricciardo for half a second. The Red Bull driver was a better than thousandths Raikkonen while Vettel made a single attempt to save tires and bet on the race finished in 4th place. Carlos Sainz could beat Max Verstappen to be 8th and Nico Hulkenberg was 10th but could be punished for the incident wheel of his car.
