2016 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad: victory for Van Avermaet ahead of Sagan
The season premiered stones, as usual, in the 2016 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. In this edition of 2016 was not the winner of the last two editions of this classic, the British Ian Stannar, so that favoritism fell again in men Etixx – Quick Step and especially its leader, Tom Boonen.
However, the men of the Belgian team again erred in strategy and allowed for a getaway that, eventually, would bear good fruit. When they decided to be shooting seriously, five men who were in head already had an advantage and a rhythm that, with what remained of career, became impossible to hunt them down.
And that in the final kilometers the front racanearon a bit and went back to lend a hand the Lotto Jumbo. But nothing, in the end, the goal of Gent, came close together Slovakian Peter Sagan, Belgian Greg Van Avermaet and Tiejs Benoot , Britain ‘s Luke Rowe and French Alexis Gougeard.
With someone like Sagan in that group, everything pointed to in the final kilometers rivals try to avoid a sprint. But no one moved and it came down to one volatta in which Greg Van Avermaet was the fastest. The Belgian is not exactly slow in these conflicts and although not as fast as Sagan did come more whole in the end.
Since 2011 when he won the Paris – Tours, the BMC team rider had managed victories to his resume but most renowned classical had always played in bone. Now, premieres his record of 2016 and the thorn is removed after a 2015 in which stepped on the podium four times in one – day races but never on the top step.
