The sporting highlights of 2016: a guide
After a fairly quiet 12 months for sport last year, 2016 is set to grab the attention of sport fans with a number of huge competitions, events and meetings. Four years on from London, the Olympic Games will return – but this year, they will be held in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro.
However, there are plenty of other events and competitions that will be grabbing plenty of attention this year. We take a look at just a few of the highlights of the 2016 sporting calendar and give our thoughts on why you should tune in to these events.
The Grand National
The Grand National is one of the most anticipated events on the British sporting calendar and every year, horse racing fans from all over the world travel to Liverpool’s very own Aintree racecourse to witness the race. Spanning over four miles, this 30-fence course is the greatest test in horse racing – even more so than the Kentucky Derby!
If you’re unable to make the event, you can still check out Coral’s horse racing betting markets and place bets on the big race via their website. Online horse race betting is much different to wagering on the concourse as you have the option to cash in midway through the race. While this is an option, there’s nothing quite like the thrill and vibe of a live race day – especially at Aintree on National day!
This summer, 24 European nations will compete against one another in the European Championships. France are hosting the competition and Didier Deschamps’ men will be quietly confident of their chances – especially in front of their avid and passionate supporters. At the time of writing, Coral value France at 11/4 to lift the trophy and, based on current form, it would be hard to argue against them.
While the European Championships aren’t as big as the World Cup, they are still important and all 24 sides will be looking to make their mark on the tournament. In a miraculous turn of events, Wales – playing in their first major competition since the 1958 World Cup – were drawn in the same group as England and that clash is sure to be a fiery affair. One thing’s for sure: it’s set to be a brilliant tournament and YOU must keep up with the latest news, either via Coral’s website or by watching the competition on your television.
The United States Grand Prix
Towards the end of the calendar year, the United States Grand Prix will take place and the 2016 edition of the race could be monumental in deciding the fate of the World Championship. In recent times, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton have scrapped directly against one another for the crown, with the latter coming out on top in each of the last two years.
The race, which is held in Austin, Texas, is one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the Formula One season and tends to throw up plenty of drama, excitement and twists and turns – both on and off the track! Who knows, it could determine the winner of this year’s title and it will be available for all UK viewers on terrestrial television, as well as at a number of online establishments.
